Inaugurated in 1962 in Sintra, Tabaqueira’s factory is today one of the main production centers of Philip Morris International (PMI) within the European Union, employing around 700 workers. We are the biggest tobacco company in Portugal, one of the biggest companies in the country and yet one of the top 10 main national exporters, producing to more than 30 countries. The factory produces cigarettes both for national and exports market, and also the so-called tobacco semi-products, exclusively intended for exports to other PMI affiliates that do not have such a complete production unit. The continuous improvement in the factory, the application of continuous improvement methodologies and our commitment to achieve excellence, have been crucial to increase competitiveness, production capacity, productivity and manufacturing quality of our core products to maintain our position in the market. More recently, Tabaqueira as a PMI subsidiary, has expressed publicly its decision to establish a new path on its history. In this context, it has been one of the worldwide pionneers in the commercialization of a new and completely innovative way of consumption of tobacco products, without combustion, and pottentially entailing reduced risk. We are committed to develop a variety of products without combustion, less harmful, which based on scientific evidence we believe are a better choice to smokers. This means “building a smoke free future” and that’s where our transformation lays. It is the biggest change in our history and we believe we are in the right path. Our vision is to offer smokers a better option. Our priority is clear: that millions of adult smokers that would otherwise continue to smoke adopt less harmful alternatives, as soon as possible, in order to contribute to a more sustainable future.
